Boxing, MMA, Kick-boxing and Karate injuries

April 16, 2010

Last Sunday I was a spectator at the Absolute Adrenaline Demolition show at the 02 Academy in Boscombe. It was a great night with fantastic MMA fights (mixed martial arts), white-collar boxing and superb kick boxing.

All martial arts require lots of training to be physical and technically ready, injuries will be highly likely! The art of dealing with this is seeking aid early to reduce further injury and implementing particular rehabilitation exercises to reduce the risk of continued aggravation.

Back2Fitness Injury Clinics can provide fully examination, injury treatment and rehabilitation exercises and preventive strategies to be implemented into your training regime. Sports massage is also a great way to recover from trainig and our experienced Sports Therapists at Back2Fitness would pick up on any imbalance potentially leading to the risk of injury. Why Muscle Cramps?

March 21, 2010

Muscle cramps

At some point everyone is likely to experience muscle spasm. When the muscle spasm is prolonged and strong the muscle cramps. Muscle cramps vary in the time that they last and can involve part, whole or group of muscles.

Any skeletal muscle can cramp for example the calf (gastrocnemius), the legs and particularly the calf cramp most commonly. Smooth muscle tissue can cramp however we are only concerned currently with the musculoskeletal system.

Causes of Muscle Cramp

The cause of muscle cramps is thought to be a result if excessively excited nerves stimulating the muscle. This occurs due to:

  • Injury to nerve (or entrapment) and muscle
  • Dehydration (Suffered by a lot of athletes hydration is crucial during sport)
  • Low blood levels of potassium, magnesium or calcium
  • Vitamin deficiencies (B1, B5 and B6).
  • Some prescribed medications
  • Vigorous activity in warm weather

Muscle Cramps Treatment

The best treatment fpr a cramping muscle is to relax it. This is typically done through stretching, massage and heat application such as a hot water bottle.

The initial cause of the muscle cramp needs to be assessed and corrected to prevent future cramping episodes. For  example:

  • Stretching with warm ups and cool down before and after activity are recommended to reduce cramps that are brought on by vigorous activity.
  • Hydration during and after physical activity is crucial. The hydration has to be appropriate to replace any electrolytes used.
  • Excessive fatigue in warm weather should be avoided.
